How many diets have you tried? One? Two? More than 3? However many you’ve done, the likelihood is you’re not doing too great if you’re still looking for a diet to suit you.

The thing is, if you don’t have the right mindset, the chances are you’re not going to succeed – and if you’re like most people, you may have followed the same patterns.

Firstly, you’re excited – you follow all the directions, keep to your dietary requirements, and you’re buzzing because of your new healthier lifestyle. As a result, you start to lose weight. That’s great news!

You might keep this up for a few more days, or weeks, but then… you’re putting on weight again. In fact, you realise you’re putting on more weight than you had before. How could this be?

Unfortunately, most diets are gateways to additional weight. It may be surprising to hear – aren’t diets meant to help you lose weight? Well, the reason most people follow this all too familiar pattern is because they don’t have the right mindset. Regardless of what diet you choose – the keto diet, Atkins diet, the paleo diet, or the long list of others – if you don’t have the right mindset, you’re setting yourself up to lose.

For the keto diet, we’ve explained three mindsets that will help you succeed.

Mindset 1: Assume you can do it!

It is always easy to get hung up on the great testimonials of any diet, or the before-and-after photos from some of their success stories – they make you feel pumped up and ready to go. The fact is, however, that a lot of them use diet testimonials and photographs exaggerate the results quite significantly, sometimes even using photoshop to edit what you can see.

So, it’s good to have some skepticism about some diets before you give them a try, but don’t let that discourage you completely. In fact, start to wrap your mind around the possibility that this diet could actually work for you. Just you. If you can’t understand that it becomes a lot easier to sabotage yourself and make the goal of losing weight much harder to reach.

Imagine it’s like basketball. You’re shooting balls into hoops. However, in the back of your head a voice is saying “Other people can shoot really well, but not me.” You’re making things unnecessarily harder for yourself, so things like your accuracy drop, and your success will be halted.

That’s why it’s important to assume that you can achieve success when it comes to the keto diet. Ignore the pictures, ignore the case studies, and ignore the testimonials – we’re talking about just you. If you can’t accept that assumption, then things are likely to be harder for you on the road ahead.

Mindset 2: Begin with what you have.

One of the reasons why a lot of people fail at the keto diet is because they believe they have to transform into a completely different person. Either that, or they believe that their circumstances need to change dramatically if they’re going to succeed.

When you think along these lines, you’re basically just giving yourself excuses for not trying, or for expecting bad results. It’s easy to get into this rutt, especially if you’ve tried and failed several diets before. It’s very easy to expect failure when you’ve gone through the same diet routine of losing weight, before you put it all back on again.

That’s why you may feel like you need to change everything – relay the groundwork for you to be successful. But, once again, you’re making things unnecessarily complicated and difficult for yourself.

The hard truth is this: there will never be a “perfect moment” for you to start the keto diet. Conditions are never perfect and so you need to come to terms with what you have right now.

Regardless of your discipline level, other life events, or whether or not you feel good about yourself, it matters most whether or not you’re ready. Whether or not you’re able to begin with what you have and assume that this diet will work for you.

Mindset 3: Enjoy your food according to rules you choose

If you’ve tried several diets before, you’re probably familiar with the feeling of a “dietary straitjacket” – the feeling that you’re forcing yourself to like food that you don’t, or leave behind food that you love. Unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time before your old habits come back to take control when this is the case.

That’s just frustrating if you end up right where you started.

That’s why you should focus on enjoying your food with the keto diet. Not something that is an ordeal, or a punishment, but a celebration of taste. Follow the keto diet rules, but pick the food you enjoy and get excited about – not the stuff that makes you feel like you’re denying yourself joy.

Firstly, you pick the keto diet rules. Then you select your diet based on your existing tastes. You don’t need to become someone else, change your taste buds, or anything else that makes it unnecessarily difficult for you. The only tricky part that comes with the keto diet is avoiding sweet foods, but the rest of your taste is available. As long as you manage your sweet tooth, you should be alright!

Now, these aren’t 3 mindsets you’re going to pick up overnight, because you’ve got mindsets already that have been around much longer. However, if you manage to adopt these 3 ways of thinking, your experience with the keto diet should be a lot easier going and success will be on the horizon.
